5x Rimu - $9.99 each
The New Zealand Rimu is a majestic, evergreen conifer native to the forests of New Zealand. It belongs to the Podocarpaceae family and is one of the largest and most revered tree species in the country. Rimu trees can grow up to 50 meters (164 feet) tall and have a trunk diameter of 1.5 meters (5 feet).
The tree has a straight, slender trunk with a reddish-brown bark that peels in strips as it matures. The leaves are needle-like, dark green, and arranged in a spiral pattern along the branches. These leaves are soft to the touch and contribute to the tree's lush, dense canopy.
Rimu is known for its distinctive, rich, reddish-brown wood, which is highly prized for its durability and beauty. The wood is often used in fine furniture, cabinetry, and flooring. The tree's berries are small and bright red, attracting birds such as the kererū (New Zealand pigeon), which plays a role in dispersing the seeds.
Rimu thrives in temperate, moist environments and prefers sheltered, well-drained soils. It is often found in lowland and montane forests, sometimes growing alongside other iconic New Zealand species like the kahikatea and totara. Although slow-growing, Rimu is long-lived, with some trees reaching over 1,000 years of age.
This tree holds cultural significance for the Māori people, who used its wood for constructing tools, canoes, and building materials. It also plays an important ecological role, providing shelter and food for various native bird and insect species.
Rimu is considered a symbol of New Zealand's natural heritage, representing resilience and longevity.
