Clay soil is common across much of New Zealand, particularly in urban subdivisions, river flats, and lowland areas. Often labelled as “difficult,” clay soil is actually nutrient-rich and highly suitable for many New Zealand native plants when managed correctly.
Clay soil gardening in NZ presents two main challenges: poor drainage in winter and hard, compacted ground in summer. Fortunately, many native plants have evolved in these exact conditions, making them ideal candidates for heavy clay soil gardens.
Rather than replacing clay soil, successful gardeners work with it.
Best practices for planting natives in clay soil:
Avoid digging or cultivating when soil is wet
Improve the topsoil with compost and organic matter
Create slightly raised planting areas
Mulch heavily to prevent cracking and compaction
This approach improves soil structure over time while maintaining the moisture-holding benefits of clay.
Many of New Zealand’s most iconic trees naturally grow in clay-rich environments:
Cordyline australis – Extremely adaptable and one of the best plants for clay soil NZ-wide
Plagianthus regius – Ideal for clay flats and restoration planting
Sophora microphylla and Sophora tetraptera – Kowhai tolerate clay once established
Pittosporum eugenioides and Pittosporum tenuifolium – Excellent shelter trees for clay soil gardens
These trees provide long-term structure and ecological value.
Shrubs form the backbone of low-maintenance clay soil gardens:
Griselinia littoralis, Broadway Mint, Twilight – Among the best native shrubs for clay soil
Coprosma robusta, Coprosma lucida, Coprosma rhamnoides – Naturally found in lowland clay forests
Olearia paniculata, Olearia traversii, Olearia lineata x odorata – Tough, wind-tolerant options
Dodonaea viscosa (Green and Purple) – Exceptional for compacted clay and dry summers
Clay soil is ideal for many structural native plants:
Phormium tenax and Phormium cookianum
Austroderia richardii and Austroderia fulvida
Carex secta, Carex virgata, Carex dissita
Juncus pallidus and Juncus edgariae
These species excel in heavy clay and are perfect for rain gardens and swales.
Clay soil holds nutrients, supports strong root systems, and suits a wide range of NZ native plants. With the right plant selection, clay soil gardening in New Zealand becomes easier, not harder.
