A specially selected mix of New Zealand natives designed to turn the garden into a useful feeding and refuge area for native birds. Rather than relying on a single food source, this combination provides fruit and berries, nectar, insect habitat, dense protective cover and taller perching structure. Coprosma, Corokia and Cabbage Tree – tī kōuka are all useful bird-garden plants, supporting fruit and nectar feeders as well as insect-eating species that forage through their foliage and branches.

  • 10x Coprosma rugosa – A tough, upright native with a wonderfully tangled network of orange-brown branchlets and masses of pale blue fruit. The berries make this particularly valuable for fruit-eating birds such as tauhou/silvereye, korimako/bellbird and kererū, while the dense branching provides protected feeding and resting habitat for smaller birds. Pīwakawaka/fantail and riroriro/grey warbler can also benefit from the insects living and sheltering amongst its intricate growth. Height 2–3 m × Width 1–1.5 m.
  • 10x Coprosma ‘Red Rock’ – A low, spreading native Coprosma with tangled red-bronze stems and blue fruit. Its berries provide seasonal food for fruit-feeding birds including tauhou/silvereye and korimako/bellbird, while its low divaricating growth creates a very different habitat layer from the taller shrubs. The intricate branches are useful cover and an insect-foraging area for pīwakawaka/fantail and riroriro/grey warbler, particularly when planted in groups beneath taller natives. Height 50 cm × Width 1 m.
  • 10x Corokia ‘Red Wonder’ – A dense, twiggy native shrub with small yellow flowers followed by conspicuous red fruit. The berries provide food for fruit-eating birds such as korimako/bellbird, tūī, tauhou/silvereye and kererū. Its masses of fine interlacing branches also create excellent sheltered habitat for smaller birds and a productive hunting ground for insect feeders such as pīwakawaka/fantail and riroriro/grey warbler. Height 2 m × Width 1 m.
  • 10x Coprosma greyii – A hardy, densely branched native Coprosma that adds another valuable layer of shelter and feeding habitat. Its fruit contributes seasonal food for fruit-eating birds such as tauhou/silvereye and korimako/bellbird, while its fine twiggy structure gives small birds somewhere to move, hide and search for insects. This makes it particularly useful for insect hunters including pīwakawaka/fantail and riroriro/grey warbler, while Coprosma fruit can also provide food for larger native fruit-eaters such as kererū. Height 2 m × Width 1 m.
  • 10x Cabbage Tree – Tī KōukaCordyline australis – The tall structural plant in the combination and an outstanding all-round bird tree. Large sprays of scented flowers provide nectar and attract insects, followed by masses of pale berries that birds readily eat. Cabbage Tree is particularly useful to tūī and korimako/bellbird, while its fruit is also valuable to kererū and tauhou/silvereye. The flowers and associated insects broaden its usefulness to insect-feeding visitors, while mature Cabbage Trees provide elevated perching, shelter and additional habitat above the shrub layer. Height 5–10 m × Width 2–3 m.

Together, the five plants create several layers of habitat rather than simply supplying berries: low tangled cover, dense medium shrubs and the taller Cabbage Tree – tī kōuka canopy. This diversity provides feeding opportunities for kererū, tūī, korimako/bellbird and tauhou/silvereye, while pīwakawaka/fantail and riroriro/grey warbler benefit from the insects, shelter and protected foraging habitat within the planting.
