Shrubs

Native shrubs like Coprosma and Corokia are essential additions to New Zealand gardens, offering a perfect blend of form, function, and resilience. These hardy evergreens are ideal for a wide range of landscaping uses—from low-maintenance hedging and windbreaks to feature planting and native revegetation projects. Their adaptability to coastal, exposed, and dry conditions makes them particularly valuable in challenging sites.

Coprosma varieties are prized for their glossy, colourful foliage—ranging from vibrant greens to bronze, gold, and even variegated tones—which provide year-round interest. Many cultivars also develop richer hues in cooler months, adding seasonal colour to the garden. Corokia, on the other hand, is known for its distinctive wiry branching, silvery-grey or olive foliage, and star-shaped yellow flowers followed by bright red berries, making it a favourite for textural contrast and structural form.

These native shrubs are not only aesthetically appealing but also incredibly low-maintenance. They thrive in full sun to partial shade, are drought-tolerant once established, and cope well with pruning—ideal for shaping into formal hedges or natural screens. In native plantings, they support biodiversity by providing food and habitat for birds and insects.

Whether you're creating a contemporary landscape, enhancing a rural block, or restoring a native ecosystem, Coprosma, Corokia, and other native shrubs offer both beauty and ecological value. Plant singly as statement pieces, or in groups for dense coverage and visual impact.
