Slope & Bank Stabilisation Combo

Take the hard work out of planting slopes, banks and difficult sloping ground with this carefully selected combination of hardy New Zealand natives. The Slope & Bank Stabilisation Combo brings together spreading groundcovers, fibrous-rooted grasses and robust woody shrubs to create multiple layers of vegetation across the slope. Together they help cover exposed soil, bind the surface, slow water movement and establish a resilient planted bank, while creating an attractive, natural-looking native landscape.

  • 10x Chionochloa flavicans – Miniature Toetoe – A compact native tussock with dense, arching green foliage and attractive feathery flower heads. Its substantial fibrous root system makes it particularly useful on banks and slopes, where numerous fine roots help hold the upper layers of soil together. Once established, its clumping form provides excellent ground coverage while adding movement and texture to the planting. Height 60–80 cm × Width 60–80 cm.
  • 5x Coprosma kirkii – A low, spreading native Coprosma ideally suited to covering open ground on banks. Its broad, trailing growth spreads laterally across the slope, helping protect exposed soil while its branching root system contributes to surface stabilisation. Particularly useful around and between taller shrubs, where it develops into a dense, low layer and helps create continuous vegetation across the bank. Height 30–50 cm × Width 1–1.5 m.
  • 5x Corokia ‘Red Wonder’ – A tough, densely branched native shrub with characteristic wiry growth and attractive darker foliage. Its woody framework and spreading root system provide a strong intermediate layer within the planting, helping bind the soil while establishing substantial vegetation above ground. Its tolerance of exposed conditions makes it particularly useful on open banks where wind and drying can be significant. Height 1.5–2 m × Width 1–1.5 m.
  • 5x Griselinia littoralis – Broadleaf – A vigorous, substantial native shrub that provides the larger structural component of the combo. As it matures, its extensive woody root system reaches through a greater volume of soil than the smaller ground-covering plants, adding deeper reinforcement to the planted slope. Its dense evergreen canopy also provides shelter, helping create more protected conditions for surrounding plants as the bank establishes. Height 3–5 m × Width 2–3 m.
  • 5x Coprosma ‘Lobster’ – A hardy, colourful native Coprosma with dense branching and distinctive warm-toned foliage. Its robust shrubby growth makes it useful for filling the middle layer of a slope planting, developing a network of woody roots beneath the soil while its foliage helps provide increasingly continuous cover above it. It adds valuable diversity to the planting while preventing a functional stabilisation scheme from looking like conventional revegetation. Height 1–1.5 m × Width 1–1.5 m.

By combining plants with different heights, growth habits and rooting characteristics, the Slope & Bank Stabilisation Combo creates a more complete planting system than relying on a single species. Lower spreading plants help cover the soil surface, dense grasses contribute masses of fine fibrous roots, and larger woody shrubs provide longer-term structure. The result is an attractive, predominantly evergreen native planting designed to progressively cover and strengthen difficult sloping ground while developing into a natural-looking landscape.
