Hebe laingii
Hebe laingii, also known as Laing's Hebe, is a compact and hardy evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. This delightful plant is known for its graceful form and vibrant display of flowers, making it a favorite for gardens that require year-round interest with minimal upkeep.
Typically reaching 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) in height and 45-60 cm (18-24 inches) in spread, Hebe laingii is perfect for smaller spaces, coastal gardens, or as a container plant. Its striking foliage consists of narrow, aromatic, silver-grey leaves that form a dense, rounded mound, providing a soft, elegant backdrop in any garden setting.
In late spring and summer, Hebe laingii produces stunning spikes of small, tubular flowers, which start off white and mature to a soft lavender-purple. These flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, adding both visual and ecological value to your landscape. The flowers are a wonderful contrast against the silvery foliage, ensuring a vibrant, eye-catching display.
This hardy hebe thrives in a range of soil types, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade, making it versatile for different garden situations. Hebe laingii is drought-tolerant once established and performs well in coastal areas, with its tolerance for salt-laden winds and exposed conditions.
Low-maintenance and resilient, Hebe laingii is a superb choice for gardens in temperate regions. Its unique combination of attractive foliage, seasonal flowers, and adaptability to various conditions makes it an excellent addition to any garden, from formal landscapes to wild, coastal plantings.
