Bring your garden to life with the Bee Combo — a collection of hardy New Zealand natives selected to help create a rich, productive garden environment for bees and other pollinating insects.

Native plants can play an important role in supporting bees by providing reliable sources of nectar and pollen throughout the flowering season. Diverse native planting also creates shelter from wind and weather, protected resting areas and a more complex habitat around the garden. Combining different flowering plants helps extend the period during which food is available rather than relying on a single short flowering event.

The pack is made up as follows:

  • 10x Corokia ‘Sunsplash’ – A colourful native Corokia with fine, wiry branching and attractive yellow-and-green variegated foliage. Its small star-shaped yellow flowers provide nectar and pollen for visiting bees and other pollinating insects. The dense, interlacing growth also creates useful shelter within a bee-friendly planting. Tough and naturally slightly irregular in habit, it is excellent for mixed borders and informal native gardens. Mature Height 2 m × Width 1.5 m

  • 10x Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ – A dense, hardy evergreen Corokia with rich green foliage and characteristic fine, interlacing branches. Numerous small star-shaped yellow flowers appear in season and are attractive to foraging bees. Its dense evergreen structure also provides valuable shelter, helping create protected pockets within exposed gardens where insects can feed and move between flowering plants. Mature Height 2 m × Width 1.5 m

  • 10x Coin Leaved Daisy Bush – Olearia nummularifolia – A distinctive subalpine native with dense twiggy growth and small yellowish-green leaves with contrasting buff undersides. Clusters of small white daisy-like flowers with yellow centres provide a useful nectar and pollen source for bees and other beneficial insects. Its ability to perform in cold, dry and exposed sites makes it particularly useful for creating pollinator-friendly gardens in challenging conditions. Mature Height 1.5 m × Width 1 m

  • 10x Olearia oleifolia – A hardy, upright New Zealand native shrub with olive-green to grey-green foliage and masses of small white flowers. The abundance of flowers provides excellent foraging opportunities for bees, making this a particularly useful shrub for incorporating into bee-friendly native plantings. Tough and adaptable, it also provides structure and shelter in exposed, windy and dry gardens. Height 1.5 m × Width 1 m

  • 20x Dwarf Toe Toe – Chionochloa flavicans – A graceful compact native tussock with soft, arching green foliage and elegant drooping flower plumes. While its role differs from the more nectar-rich flowering shrubs in the mix, its dense tussock form adds valuable structure, shelter and protected spaces at ground level, helping create a more varied and resilient habitat for insects. Height 60 cm × Width 80 cm

Native planting can provide much more for bees than flowers alone. Nectar and pollen supply essential food, while dense foliage and varied plant structures provide shelter from wind and weather and help create protected habitat. Planting a mixture of species also increases diversity and can extend the availability of flowering resources through different parts of the season.

For people, a bee-friendly native garden is also a garden full of activity. Flowering shrubs, moving grasses and the steady presence of bees and other beneficial insects create a landscape that feels alive, while diverse native planting contributes to a healthier and more resilient garden ecosystem.
