Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ – Native Hedge

Common Names: Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’, Korokio
Family: Argophyllaceae
Origin: New Zealand
Plant Type: Evergreen Native Hedge

Overview

Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ is an excellent tough, hardy and low-maintenance native hedge, combining dense evergreen foliage with the distinctive interlacing branch structure characteristic of Corokia. Its small green leaves form a substantial screen, while regular clipping encourages dense branching and a strong hedge from relatively low down.

It is particularly useful for exposed, windy, coastal and dry locations, making it an excellent choice for lifestyle blocks, rural properties, driveways and residential boundaries. It can be maintained as a relatively low hedge or allowed to develop into a taller screen of around 1.5–2 m, depending on the desired effect.

Key Features

Foliage: Small evergreen leaves with an attractive fresh to deep green colour, providing good year-round screening.
Hedging Habit: Naturally dense and twiggy, responding very well to clipping and shaping.
Form & Habit: Forms a substantial, compact hedge that can be maintained formally or allowed a slightly softer, more natural finish.
Growth Rate: Moderate, establishing into an effective hedge without becoming excessively demanding to maintain.
Hardiness: Excellent tolerance of wind, coastal exposure, frost and periods of dry conditions once established.

Recommended Hedge Spacing

Plant spacing will depend on the ultimate height and density you want from the finished hedge. For a low, compact hedge around 1 m high, plant approximately 50–60 cm apart to encourage the plants to knit together quickly and create a dense screen. For a medium hedge around 1–1.5 m high, approximately 60–80 cm apart is a good general spacing. For a taller hedge approaching 1.5–2 m, plants can be spaced around 80 cm–1 m apart, giving each plant additional room to develop a larger framework.

As a general rule, the lower and tighter you want the finished hedge, the closer the initial planting should be; taller and more informal hedges can be planted further apart.

Desired Hedge Height Example Plant Spacing Approx. Finished Length – 25 Plants
Around 1 m 50–60 cm apart 12.5–15 m
Around 1–1.5 m 60–80 cm apart 15–20 m
Around 1.5–2 m 80 cm–1 m apart 20–25 m

Please note: These spacings are provided as a general guide only. Ideal spacing can vary depending on the desired density and finished dimensions of the hedge, growing conditions, maintenance and how quickly you want the plants to knit together.

Landscaping & Garden Uses

  • Excellent tough, low-maintenance native hedge.

  • Ideal for lifestyle blocks, rural properties and driveway boundaries.

  • Particularly useful for windy and exposed locations.

  • Excellent for coastal gardens and salt-laden conditions.

  • Suitable for both lower clipped hedges and taller screening.

  • Provides year-round structure, privacy and shelter.

  • Works well as either a tidy clipped hedge or with a slightly informal, natural finish.

  • Excellent native alternative to conventional exotic hedging plants.

Care & Maintenance

Pruning: Clip while young to encourage dense branching from low down. Once the desired height is reached, periodic trimming will maintain a dense and well-defined hedge.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ is hardy and tolerant of relatively dry conditions.
Feeding: Generally undemanding; a slow-release native fertiliser can be applied during establishment if required.
Pests & Diseases: Generally hardy and relatively trouble-free.

Additional Tips

Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ is particularly attractive when the hedge is not clipped excessively tightly. Trim it to maintain the overall height and shape, then allow a little fresh growth to develop between cuts. This softens the surface and creates subtle natural irregularities while retaining a clearly defined hedge.

Fun Fact / Botanical Insight

Corokia are characterised by their distinctive divaricating growth habit, with fine branches growing in an interlacing pattern. This naturally twiggy structure is one of the reasons Corokia varieties develop into particularly dense and effective hedges.

Why Choose a Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ Hedge?

Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ is an excellent choice when you want a hardy New Zealand native hedge capable of handling demanding conditions. Its dense evergreen growth, excellent response to clipping and tolerance of wind, frost, coastal exposure and dry conditions make it particularly versatile. It can be kept compact or grown into a substantial screen, while requiring relatively modest maintenance once established.
