Contemporary Driveway Combo

A carefully selected collection of compact, architectural New Zealand natives designed to create a smart, contemporary landscape with strong year-round colour and structure. The combination of contrasting foliage, tidy forms and varied heights is particularly well suited to narrow driveway borders, entrances and other spaces where plants need to make an impact without creating a high-maintenance garden.

These hardy natives have been selected for their ability to cope with typical New Zealand conditions while requiring relatively little ongoing care once established. Their predominantly evergreen foliage means the planting retains its shape and visual interest throughout the year, while the mixture of green, bronze, burgundy and near-black foliage works particularly well alongside concrete, timber and modern architectural finishes.

• 14x Phormium ‘Pepe’ – Phormium cookianum ‘Pepe’ – One of the smallest and tidiest native flaxes, forming a compact clump of fine, olive-green leaves. Its restrained size makes it particularly useful beside driveways, providing the distinctive architectural form of a flax without becoming bulky or obstructing the space. Hardy and drought tolerant once established, it requires little more than removal of old leaves when necessary. Height 30–40 cm × Width 30–40 cm. [Large size - 9cm pot]
• 16x Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ – A tough evergreen native shrub with fresh green foliage carried on fine, interlacing branches. Its taller form provides important height amongst the lower-growing plants, breaking up an otherwise uniformly low border while retaining a relatively compact footprint. Small yellow star-shaped flowers are followed by orange-red berries, adding seasonal interest and providing food for birds. Hardy, adaptable and drought tolerant once established, it can also be lightly trimmed where a more controlled contemporary form is required. Height 1–1.5 m × Width 1–1.5 m. [Standard size - 7cm pot]
• 10x Phormium ‘Dark Delight’ – Phormium tenax ‘Dark Delight’ – A compact architectural flax with dramatic deep burgundy to almost black foliage. The strong upright-to-arching leaves provide excellent contrast against concrete and lighter green plants, making it particularly effective as an intermittent feature along a modern driveway. Tough, wind and salt tolerant and drought tolerant once established, it provides strong year-round colour with very little maintenance. Height 90 cm × Width 90 cm. [Large size - 9cm pot]
• 13x Astelia ‘Westland’ – Astelia nervosa ‘Westland’ – A striking clump-forming native with broad, arching silver-green foliage flushed with bronze and copper. Its softer flowing form provides a useful contrast to the more upright flaxes while retaining the strong architectural character required in contemporary planting. Hardy and low maintenance, it performs particularly well in exposed and windy locations and tolerates dry periods once established, making it an excellent driveway and entrance plant. Height 60 cm–1 m × Width 60 cm–1 m. [XL size - 1.5l pot]
• 15x Cordyline ‘Renegade’ – Renegade Cabbage Tree – A distinctive compact-growing cabbage tree selection with rich burgundy to chocolate-purple strap-like foliage. Its stronger vertical habit introduces occasional height and creates a dramatic focal point amongst the lower plants without the bulk of a conventional cabbage tree. Particularly effective against concrete, dark cladding and contemporary architecture, it is hardy, adaptable and tolerant of windy and coastal conditions, with minimal maintenance once established. Height 1.5–2.5 m × Width 1–1.5 m. [Large size - 9cm pot]

Together the contrasting heights, foliage colours and growth forms create a structured but naturally varied landscape rather than a repetitive formal border. Once established, the planting provides a strong year-round display with relatively little pruning, watering or general maintenance, making it an excellent option where a clean, enduring result is wanted without constant attention.
