New Build Combo – Strong Architectural Form

A bold native planting combination designed for modern new-build homes where strong structure, contrasting foliage and year-round form are key. The mix combines upright feature plants, substantial sculptural clumps and lower-growing shrubs to create clearly defined layers while retaining a clean, contemporary character.

• 7x Astelia ‘Westland’ – Astelia nervosa ‘Westland’ – A striking architectural native with broad, arching foliage in silver-green flushed with rich bronze and copper tones. Its substantial clumping habit gives the planting weight at lower levels and provides a strong contrast to the narrower, more upright forms around it. Excellent for repeating through larger beds to create rhythm and continuity. Height 60 cm–1 m × Width 60 cm–1 m. [XL size – 1.5l cm pot]
• 7x Cordyline ‘Red Star’ – Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’ – A dramatic upright cabbage tree with long, narrow foliage in rich burgundy-red tones. Developing considerably greater height than the surrounding shrubs and clumping plants, it provides important vertical structure and makes an excellent feature plant against contemporary architecture. Height 2–3 m × Width 1–1.5 m. [XL size – 1.5l cm pot]
• 6x Cordyline ‘Renegade’ – A compact, dark-foliaged cabbage tree with rich burgundy to chocolate-purple foliage and a strong architectural form. Its cascading strap-like leaves create a substantial sculptural feature, giving the garden bold colour and vertical emphasis while remaining lower than the eventual height of ‘Red Star’. Particularly effective repeated amongst contrasting green foliage. Height 1.5–2.5 m × Width 1–1.5 m. [Large size – 9 cm pot]
• 10x Corokia ‘Geenty’s Green’ – A tough evergreen native shrub with fresh green foliage carried on fine, interlacing branches. Its taller shrubby form introduces useful height and volume amongst the lower plants while providing an important green contrast to the bronze and burgundy architectural foliage. Small yellow flowers followed by berries provide additional seasonal interest. Height 1.5–2 m × Width 1–1.5 m. [Standard size - 7cm pot]
• 8x Dwarf Snow Totara – Podocarpus nivalis – A compact, naturally spreading native conifer with dense dark-green foliage and a distinctly low, broad habit. It provides a strong evergreen foundation around the front and edges of the planting, contrasting particularly well with the taller strappy foliage and helping soften the transition into surrounding hard landscaping. Height 50 cm × Width 1 m. [Standard size – 7 cm pot]

Together these plants create a strongly architectural landscape with clearly differentiated layers of height, form and foliage. The taller Cordylines and Corokia provide the upper structure, Astelia fills the middle layer, and Dwarf Snow Totara spreads across the lower level.
