Overview

Hebe treadwellii is a compact, low-growing New Zealand native hebe naturally found in subalpine areas of the South Island. It forms a spreading, bushy shrub with attractive glossy green foliage and a naturally neat, ground-hugging habit. In the wild it grows amongst subalpine shrubland and grassland, making it particularly well adapted to cool conditions and exposed sites. (New Zealand Plant Conservation Network)

Growing to around 30 cm high, Hebe treadwellii is an excellent choice where a tough, compact native is required without obscuring views or neighbouring plants. Its combination of dense foliage, small white summer flowers and naturally spreading form makes it particularly useful in rock gardens, alpine-style plantings, along edges and banks, or mass planted as a low native groundcover.

Key Features

Foliage: Attractive oval to slightly elongated leaves, typically around 1–3 cm long. The foliage ranges from light to dark green and is often glossy, giving the plant a fresh appearance throughout the year. (New Zealand Plant Conservation Network)

Flowers / Fruit: Produces short spikes of small white flowers, generally from December through February. The flower spikes occur towards the ends of the branches and provide a delicate contrast against the darker foliage. (New Zealand Plant Conservation Network)

Form & Habit: Naturally low, spreading and bushy, with branches that may lie close to the ground before turning upwards at the tips. This gives established plants a broad, informal alpine character.

Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. Plants gradually develop into compact spreading shrubs and require very little pruning to retain their natural form.

Cultural & Ecological Value: A genuinely New Zealand endemic species naturally associated with the mountains of the central and northern South Island. Its low height makes Hebe treadwellii particularly useful at the front of native borders, where larger hebes can become too dominant. It also works extremely well amongst rocks, gravel and tussocks where its spreading habit can soften harder landscape features.

Maintenance & Care

Pruning: Generally requires very little pruning. Light trimming after flowering can be used to maintain a particularly compact shape, although allowing the plant to develop its naturally irregular alpine form often produces the best appearance.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are relatively low maintenance, although some supplementary watering can be beneficial during prolonged dry periods.

Feeding: Usually requires little additional fertiliser. A light application of slow-release fertiliser during spring can encourage healthy new growth where soils are particularly poor.

Pests & Diseases: Generally hardy and trouble-free when planted in an open position with good drainage. Avoid permanently waterlogged soils.

Wildlife & Biodiversity

The small summer flowers provide an additional flowering resource within native gardens and help add diversity to mixed plantings. Hebe treadwellii is especially useful when combined with other alpine and subalpine natives to recreate the layered vegetation found naturally in New Zealand's mountain environments.

As an endemic species, it is also an excellent choice for gardeners wanting to incorporate less commonly cultivated New Zealand plants into their landscape.
