Olearia traversii

Olearia Traversii - Chatham Island Ake Ake is a very tough and hardy shrubby tree.  Being part of the Olearia family Chatham Island Ake Ake is especially suited for a range of tough conditions such as coastal plantings, alpine situations and anywhere that experiences drought and strong wind.

It has bright green leaves, with a white underside. The new stems are also white giving the overall shrub a bright light colour.  The foliage is tough and leathery, ideal for tolerating strong winds.

Because it is so versatile and tough, Chatham Island Ake Ake is a very popular choice for shelter plantings in high wind areas.  Often it is left to grow unclipped, where it takes on a very gnarled and rugged look.  It also responds well to trimming, with an occassional trim keeping your shelter belt looking immaculate.  It can also be trimmed more regularly for a more formal looking hedge or shaped shrubbery.   No matter how hard this shrub is cut back it will bounce back beautifully with lots of new growth.

Thrives in dry conditions and will withstand almost any amount of drought.  It is also fine in wetter climates, provided it has good drainage.  This is a truly versatile shrubby tree that will perform well in coastal environments and can be grown inland or in alpine situations.

Chatham Ake Ake can be left untrimmed to form a larger shrubby tree up to 8 metres, making it a great addition to the drought hardy shelter belt or screen.
