Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’
Common names: Yellow Wave Flax, New Zealand Flax
Family: Asphodelaceae
Origin: New Zealand cultivar
Plant Type: Evergreen Flax / Architectural Foliage Plant
Overview
Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ is a highly ornamental New Zealand flax prized for its distinctive arching foliage striped in yellow, lime-green and fresh green tones. The broad, flowing leaves create a bright cascading effect, bringing year-round colour, movement and strong architectural form to the garden.
A particularly effective landscaping plant, ‘Yellow Wave’ can be used as a feature specimen or repeated through larger plantings to introduce contrasting colour and texture. Its combination of colourful foliage, toughness and relatively easy care makes it well suited to contemporary gardens, native plantings, coastal landscapes and mixed borders.
Key Features
Foliage: Broad, strap-like leaves with prominent creamy-yellow to golden-yellow bands mixed with lime and green. The foliage arches gracefully outward, producing the characteristic flowing appearance that gives ‘Yellow Wave’ its name.
Flowers / Fruit: Established plants may produce tall flower stems carrying tubular flowers that provide nectar for birds and insects, although ‘Yellow Wave’ is primarily grown for its exceptional foliage.
Form & Habit: Dense, clump-forming flax with long, gracefully arching leaves creating a broad, fountain-like form.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Cultural & Ecological Value: Phormiums are characteristic New Zealand plants. When flowering, their nectar-rich blooms can provide food for native birds and pollinating insects.

Additional Tips
- Position where the arching foliage has enough room to develop its characteristic fountain-like form.
- Good sunlight generally produces the strongest yellow and lime foliage colour.
- Particularly effective against darker backgrounds where the bright variegated leaves stand out.
- Combines well with hebes, coprosmas, corokias, grasses and darker-leaved Phormium varieties.
- Excellent planted in groups for a bold sweep of year-round colour.
Fun Fact / Botanical Insight
Despite commonly being called New Zealand flax, Phormium is not a true flax. The name comes from the exceptionally strong fibres contained within its leaves. Native Phormium species, particularly harakeke, have long held enormous practical and cultural importance in New Zealand.
